Gartner Hype Cycle for Storage Technologies, 2010

Despite some incursion from SSDs, HDDs are and will remain the primary data storage elements in all computing systems for many years to come and a pitiable portion of HDDs shipped today contain any preloaded encryption technologies.

"This will soon change. The Trusted Computing Group (TCG), a not-for-profit organization formed to develop, define, and promote open standards for hardware-enabled trusted computing and security technologies, has been working for several years on industry-standard FDE designed to make every HDD produced by every HDD maker a SED, thereby providing globally enhanced possibilities for data security. Given the current status of various working groups within the TCG and the widespread support from controller suppliers, drive manufacturers, and server and storage system vendors, Gartner believes that, within five years, all HDDs will be shipped preloaded with some kind of industry-standard FDE technology..."
