Why SEDs Are the Future of Storage, Says PC World
Earlier this month, the storage industry gathered at Storage Visions, co-located with CES, in Las Vegas. Trusted Computing Group (TCG) has been a long-time supporter of this event as a great way to mingle with everyone who is anyone in the industry and to talk about one of our most popular technologies, self-encrypting drives.
As it has in previous years, Storage Visions conference content included discussion of security and data protection - which is, of course, an increasingly hot topic especially for content providers. In a panel moderated by TCG member Michael Willett, Samsung, attendees heard from a number of companies about their visions of data protection. As Willett noted, losing stuff is expensive. TCG has been working on this for some time with its self-encrypting drive (SED) specifications, now implemented by a number of companies.
PC World's Michael Miller, a long-time industry watcher, wrote about this event in an article, "Why Self-Encrypting Drives are the Future of Storage," Jan. 24, 2012. He notes, "I've long been a believer in encryption, both on desktops and laptops (through techniques such as BitLocker) and on USB flash drives. To me, self-encrypting disks, and the software to manage that, make sense for many businesses."
