New Ponemon Research Confirms Effectiveness of Self-Encrypting Drives -- Still New, But Widely Thought to Be Effective

by TCG in Action

Dr. Larry Ponemon of the Ponemon Institute comments almost every day on the growing number of data breaches. His report on such breaches is considered one of the most authoritative works on the topic. Next week, in a live webcast, Ponemon will address what many are seeing as a relatively simple solution to many data breaches: self-encrypting drives, or SEDs.

Ponemon will break out results from a new research report the Institute conducted this spring. The report , "Self-Encrypting Drives: A Study of IT Practitioners," interviewed more than 500 in a variety of markets. A full 70 percent of these IT respondents believed that self-encrypting drives "would have had an enormous and positive impact on the protection of sensitive and confidential data."

Dr. Ponemon will talk about the details of the study on Tuesday, May 10, 10 a.m. Pacific/1 p.m. East. To attend the free webcast.

Not surprisingly, respondents thought that compliance is the main driver for encrypting data at rest, which included financial documents, trade secrets and employee records. The study found that a high number of users often turn off software-based encryption, leaving records open to potential breaches.

Dial in next week to learn more about the study, which was sponsored by the Trusted Computing Group.
