Dr. William Luti of DMI Talks Trusted Computing
Recently, Dr. William Luti talked about Trusted Computing in an interview in the online publication the New New Internet (http://www.trustedcomputinggroup.org/media_room/news/195 ). Former U.S. Naval Office Luti, who also has worked in the White House and in industry, now is executive vice president for Digital Management, Inc. DMI is a TCG member and recently won a contract with the U.S. Air Force to develop trusted computing technologies (http://www.defense.gov/contracts/contract.aspx?contractid=4460).
In addition to talking about DMI generally, Luti notes that "...trusted computing technologies show real promise to transform the IT security landscape." He explains that trusted computing is different from other security approaches in that it provides hardware-based, embedded protection that protect systems before they're used or connected. This approach means that only secure and trusted systems get access to the network.
Luti says that the Trusted Platform Module, or TPM, could "...finally bring an end to the arms race between malware creation and detection." He's asked about the role of trusted computing in cloud computing, and he believes that trusted computing "...could hold the key to making the cloud-services model usable by government agencies and businesses with high security requirements."
The interview summarizes with the some of the recent developments around trusted computing, including the fall 2010 NSA Trusted Computing Conference & Exposition, DoD requirements for the TPM and other activities.
