Commonly Asked Questions about Self-Encrypting Drives
Late last year, Trusted Computing Group and Information Week hosted a webinar about self-encrypting drives. In that webinar, developers of the TCG's Opal specification for self-encrypting drives (SEDs) and Information Week's industry observer discussed the definition and mechanics of these new kinds of drives and how they are managed.
With more than 100 attendees for the live version, the session generated lots of great questions about SEDs. While general knowledge of the concept of SEDs is high, there are still lots of misconceptions about how these drives are managed and their role versus software-based encryption.
A lot of the questions touched on remote administration and key management. Other attendees asked about export of the drives, and many wondered about the impact of encryption on drive performance.
All of the questions posed during the webinar have been answered by a team of TCG experts and are posted online.
We encourage you to review this and contact us if you have more questions.
