Hot Dice, Loose Slots and Trusting Your Storage

by TCG in Action

The first week of January sees TCG heading to Vegas, baby to continue its drumbeat for encrypting valuable content directly on the drive. TCG members and rest of the movers and shakers in the storage industry gather January 4-5 at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas for Storage Visions, to debate, discuss and see the latest storage devices and technologies in action. TCG has long supported Tom Coughlin's premier gathering of the brightest in the industry, and this year is no exception...

In Booth 29, we will show several examples of the many available self-encrypting drives based on the Opal specification. While showing a couple of drives might not sound exciting, the real milestone here is that now, the Opal specification for incorporating encryption into the drive is widely accepted and now included in millions of hard drives available today. And, there are a number of software applications now available to manage these drives, including a large number of them, remotely. So, we have come a long way since our first Storage Visions in which we talked about the concept of self-encrypting drives, but were a long way from actually having them available.

Speaking of, if you have not read it, Gartner has commented recently on the topic of the availability and outlook for these drives.

TCG speakers also will participate in what is shaping up to be a very interesting panel session, Finding, Protecting and Using Content" on January 4, 2011, 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. TCG will be represented Michael Willett, Samsung, and Aidan Herbert, Wave Systems. In addition to discussion of self-encrypting drives, the session's panelists will explore the latest developments in content indexing and searching, including automated metadata generation. It also examines the role digital storage will play in providing greater privacy protection.
