Yes, Enterprises ARE Using Trusted Platform Modules!
Despite there being hundreds of millions of Trusted Platform Modules (TPMs) embedded into PCs, it's often noted that not all of these TPMs are being used. That is changing rapidly as the applications and use cases have become increasingly available and apparent.
Last month, the huge - and hugely influential - international consulting firm Price Watershouse Cooper (PwC) said it is migrating 150,000 users to systems with TPMs. The TPMs will be used for "hardware-based storage of private keys, the foundation for employee desktop authentication." The firm recognized that software-based storage was inherently insecure and vulnerable to attacks that could compromise critical data.
The firm is using tools from TCG member Wave Systems to manage the migration and the assignment of keys and related administrative functions. All the management can be done remotely, which is a huge leap from early models of having to touch every TPM-based system.
