How can flash memory be secured? What is the role of existing or new industry standards? At the upcoming Flash Memory Summit, experts in security and storage will sort out answers to these questions. Vijay Ahuja, Cipher Solutions and Bob Thibadeau, Wave Systems, will co-chair a pre-conference Flash Security Workshop on Monday, August 16, 2010, 08.30 a.m. - 5.00 p.m.

The Summit is hosted by storage expert Tom Coughlin (liaison and expert member of the TCG Storage Workgroup) and attracts the key players in the flash memory industry. The Trusted Computing Group has participated for several years to share information and progress on its trusted storage specifications and their relationship to flash memory devices. This year, a new pre-conference event will focus on this topic.

The Flash Security Workshop is being offered for the first time this year, which underscores the increasing interest in securing flash devices. The Workshop consists of invited talks and industry panels, focusing on the current state of flash security, as well as future directions. Several TCG member companies are represented on the agenda, including Wave Systems (Bob Thibadeau), SandForce (Dmitry Obukhov), GuardianEdge (Sandler Rubin), and Samsung (Michael Willett), among others. The TCG Trusted Storage Specifications that define self-encrypting drives (SED) will be featured in several presentations. Obukhov will talk about the "Seven Myths about Storage Encryption", Willett will highlight "The Shift to Self-Encrypting Solid-State Drives", and Rubin will summarize the "Challenges Managing Self-Encrypting NAND Flash Devices."

Thibadeau and Willett will alternately chair and serve on panels that ask the questions "Is Flash Memory Secure Today?" and what is the "Future of Flash Memory"?
